Abstract
Supracondlylar fracture of the humerus is the most common fracture of the elbow in children and it can also be one of the most difficult fractures to be treated, especially in the management of the displaced supracondylar fracture of the elbow.
A number of methods to manage supracondylar fracture of the elbow in children have been being practiced and the ideal one is generally agreed with prompt, accurate anatomic reduction, performed with the least possible trauma, and it will prevent most complicatiions.
33 patients with displaced supracondylar fracture of the elbow managed by percutaneous pinning at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, S.C.H. Medical School from June, 1975 to June, 1981 were reviewed and the following results were obtained.
1. The age of the patients ranged from 2 years to 15 years, frepuently occured between the ages of 5 to 10 years (69.8%), and the sex ratio was 1.7 : 1 in male to female.
2. The left side was involved in 18 patients (54.5%)
3. Of all fractures-were extension type, and posteromedial displacement in the displaced distal fragment was 25 patients (75.8961).
4. Most cases were treated by blind percutaneous pinning.
a) Single pin through olecranon : 4 cases (12.1%)
b) Pins through bilateral epicondyle : 29 cases (87.9%)
5. In the 21 patients which could be assessed, the results of treatment by Mitchell and adam¢¥s criteria were excellent 16 cases (76.2%), good 2 cases (9.5%) , unsatisfactory 3 cases (14.3%).
